Batam, SEAJori – Activity at Anak Krakatau volcano on Saturday has disrupted flight operations at several airports in Indonesia. It’s prompting schedule adjustments and cancellations, including several services connecting Batam and Jakarta.
Annang Setia Budhi, President Director of PT Bandara International Batam (BIB), the operator of Hang Nadim International Airport, said the volcanic activity had affected flight operations involving airports in the impacted areas.
“According to official information that we received this morning at 6 a.m two airports temporarily suspended flight operations. They are Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng, Jakarta and Radin Inten II International Airport in Lampung,” Annang Said on Sunday, (September 6,2026).
Soekarno-Hatta International Airport suspended operations from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., while Radin Inten II International Airport temporarily halted operations from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Both are local time.
Because of the temporary suspensions, Annang said it is also affected several flights to and from Batam.
According to BIB, on the Jakarta (CGK)–Batam (BTH) route, the cancelled flights were Super Air Jet IU-850 and Citilink Indonesia QG-940. While flight on the Batam (BTH)–Jakarta (CGK) route, the cancelled flights were Batik Air ID-6863, Super Air Jet IU-851, Citilink Indonesia QG-941.
Annang said the airport operator had taken precautionary measures to anticipate possible passenger congestion caused by flight changes and cancellations.
PT BIB has increased coordination with airlines and relevant authorities, regularly monitored passenger flows and strengthened the readiness of terminal facilities and supporting personnel.
The measures are intended to ensure that passengers receive clear information, adequate services and assistance while at Hang Nadim International Airport.
The airport management also is continuing to monitor developments related to Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity and its potential impact on flight operations.
He also said operational adjustments could be implemented based on flight safety considerations and official information from relevant aviation authorities.
“We need to inform that passengers scheduled to travel are advised to check their flight status and schedules before heading to the airport, including any changes, delays or cancellations through their respective airlines’ official channels,” he told.
On behalf of PT BIB, Annang also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the situation and thanked passengers for their understanding and cooperation in following official information and applicable operational requirements.
Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait erupted continuously from Saturday (September 5, 2026), beginning at around 11:07 p.m. local time, according to authorities.
The eruption is suspected to have caused loud booming sounds and tremors reported by residents in three provinces, such as Bandung area, Banten, and Lampung.
Head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Lana Saria, said the phenomena were strongly believed to be linked to Mount Anak Krakatau’s eruptive activity monitored by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
The eruption continued until at least 4:40 a.m. local time, with lava eruptions containing quartz sand reportedly reaching the Natar area in Lampung who also impacted several flights. “The eruption reached Natar. It made the skin feel sore,” a resident, Danan Wahyu, said. (*)
